Project objectives

Russia’s war against Ukraine has led to a significant influx of refugees into the EU, underscoring the need for both material and mental health support. Mental health support remains a challenge due to a shortage of qualified professionals with the psychological training. To address these needs, the project created an online course for social workers and adult educators, aimed at enhancing their skills in managing trauma, stress, and grief among refugees. By empowering educators, the project supports the successful integration and civic engagement of refugees.

Project objectives

Enhance Psychological Literacy: Equip social workers and adult educators with knowledge in trauma, grief, and loss to effectively support refugees.

Empower Educators to Build Resilience: Provide tools and techniques to help refugees cope with trauma and foster resilience.

Prevent Negative Mental Health Impacts: Reduce the adverse effects of war trauma on refugees’ mental health and address burnout among support professionals.

Strengthen Refugee Integration: Promote social networks, resilience, and integration potential, enabling active social and economic participation in the EU.

Lower Community Costs: Aim to reduce healthcare and social benefit costs by mitigating the long-term impacts of war trauma on refugees.

Project results

Online Course for Adult Educators: Created an online course titled “Psychological Literacy in Trauma, Grief, and Loss” to build essential psychological skills among educators.

Non-formal Educational Program: Developed the “Building Resilience for Refugees” program, providing practical, resilience-building tools for refugees in a structured educational setting.

Widespread Dissemination and Engagement: Promoted the course through social media, professional networks, and platforms such as EPALE, reaching about 30,000 individuals.

Increased Psychological Literacy: Improved the psychological skills of adult educators and social workers, enhancing their capacity to support refugees.

Multilingual Accessibility: Made program materials accessible in multiple languages (English, Dutch, Swedish, Ukrainian), expanding the program’s reach across different EU regions.

There are likely few people who have not felt the effects of traumatic stress in their life. Trauma-informed care recognizes signs and symptoms of trauma in self and others, as well as the adverse impact the effects of trauma can have on health and well-being.

Embedding a trauma-informed approach into organisational culture through policies, procedures, and training is essential to providing responsive care for refugees and other vulnerable groups.
